Is Microsoft Killing Off Start Menu Live Tiles?
Microsoft hasn't made it easy to personalize the Start Menu tiles. Here's how you can go about customizing tiles in Windows 10. This turns a live tile into a static one, lowering distraction value by quite a lot. Right-click a live tile, go to More and select Turn Live Tile off. Right-click the tile, select Resize, and choose from the options to fit it in with the others. Now, let's say you want to add another tile to the folder, such as the one for the Movies & TV app.

Fortunately for those of us who hate them, they are easy to get rid of, and for those of us who like them, they are easy to modify so as to better suit our needs. In this article, I will give you a brief tutorial on how to move, resize, and add tiles, and also how to get rid of them altogether.

Some of these customization options are not easy to access. As well as that, some parts of Windows 10 aren't as easily customizable, such as the Windows 10 Start Menu tiles. Of course, the ability to turn live tiles off is going to appeal to quite a few people who just want their Start menu to be functional and simple. In addition to pinning to Start, you can pin or unpin from the taskbar, and uninstall the app.You can also resize tiles to better fit within your scheme. Your choices are small, medium, wide, and large.

While these aren't custom Start Menu live tiles, you might find the tweaks you make here are what you need. If you’re running Windows 8.1 I’d still recommend you start off with a colour theme for your tiles…you can always switch to transparent later.
I try to stick to one main colour and then MAX 2 supporting colours. Colour has always been really important part of the home screen for me. What I suggest is that once you know what theme you want to do, do a little digging online for pics and see what kind of colours come up. A good example would be the pink colour scheme I’ve chosen here for Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing. The difference between simply adding gaming programs to your Start Menu and using Steam Tile is stark and impressive. Steam Tile also allows you gaming access without having to open the Steam library.
To remove it, you can either right-click on the taskbar and unpin the item, or use the “Unpin from taskbar” option detailed previously. If you want to pin or repin an app then click or tap the “All apps” button, long-press or right-click the app you want, and select “Pin to Start”. If you want to minimize your menu some, place the mouse over the right edge of the Start menu and drag it across until only the main menu can be seen and let go. Please note that Better StartMenu requires PNG files to create custom Start Menu live tiles. The Helper program saves the tile data, including the name, icon, and path of the program, while Better StartMenu adds the tile onto your Start Menu.
